Everything we get asked.
The short, honest answers — from scanning accuracy to privacy to what happens if a product isn’t in the database.
Using Gluten Safety
Is Gluten Safety really free?
Yes. Scanning, ingredient analysis, and your saved-products list are free forever. We may add optional premium features later, but the core scanner stays free.
How accurate is the scanner?
We identify every known gluten ingredient in a product’s declared ingredients list. Our biggest limitation is cross-contamination during manufacturing, which may not appear on the label. For strict celiac diets, always verify by reading the full packaging and confirming with the manufacturer for “may contain” warnings.
Does it work offline?
Barcode lookups need an internet connection to check our product database. Label-photo analysis (where you photograph the ingredient list) uses on-device processing when the product isn’t recognized.
What if a product isn’t in the database?
Our label-photo mode works on any product. Just photograph the ingredient list and we’ll parse it for you — even if the barcode isn’t recognized.
Does it handle international labels?
Yes — English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, and Portuguese ingredient text are supported, with more languages being added regularly.
Can I save products I’ve scanned?
Yes. Tap the bookmark icon on any result to add it to your saved-products list. The list is synced to your device so it’s there next time you’re in the store.
Living with gluten restriction
Does it catch hidden gluten like malt or modified starches?
Yes — we scan for every known gluten source: wheat, barley, rye, malt, modified wheat starch, most soy sauces (which contain wheat), beer, and regular oats (cross-contamination risk). We flag oats as “may contain” unless explicitly labeled gluten-free.
Is it safe to rely on for celiac disease?
Gluten Safety is a tool to help you make faster decisions — it is not a medical device and not a substitute for reading labels yourself or consulting your doctor or dietitian. Always verify ingredient information on the packaging.
What’s the difference between “may contain” and “avoid”?
“Avoid” means a gluten ingredient is in the declared ingredient list. “May contain” means the declared ingredients are gluten-free, but there’s a cross-contamination risk (shared equipment, facility, or ambiguous ingredient like “natural flavoring”). Strict celiacs should treat “may contain” as avoid.
Does it check for wheat allergy or dermatitis herpetiformis?
The scanner flags wheat and wheat derivatives the same way it flags gluten. If you have a wheat allergy specifically, the results are useful, but please work with an allergist — our app is not an allergen-detection medical device.
What about oats?
We flag oats as “may contain gluten” unless the product is specifically labeled gluten-free oats. Conventional oats are processed alongside wheat, so cross-contamination is common. A small percentage of celiacs also react to avenin in oats themselves.
Your data and our practices
What happens to the photos I scan?
Photos are sent to OpenAI’s API for analysis and are not permanently stored on our servers. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
Do you sell my data?
No. We do not sell your personal information to anyone. We use analytics (AppsFlyer, Facebook SDK) to understand app performance, and we share non-personal data with advertising networks.
Can I delete my data?
Yes. Email support@glutensafe.io from the address associated with your account and we’ll delete all data we hold.
Do I need an account?
No. The scanner works with no sign-up. Subscriptions for any future premium features would be handled through your App Store or Google Play account — not through us directly.
When something goes wrong
The barcode isn’t scanning.
Make sure the barcode is well-lit and fully in frame. If it still won’t scan, switch to label-photo mode and photograph the ingredient list directly — that works on any product.
The app is giving wrong results.
Manufacturer formulations change. If you spot an inaccurate result, tap “Report” on the result screen and we’ll investigate. Always verify by reading the package ingredients yourself.
The app crashes or freezes.
Update to the latest version in the App Store or Google Play. If the issue persists, email support@glutensafe.io with your device model and iOS or Android version.
My saved products disappeared.
Saved products are stored on your device. If you changed devices without signing in, they may not have transferred. Contact support with the date range and we can try to help recover them.
Subscriptions and payments
Will this stay free?
The core scanner — barcode lookup, label-photo analysis, saved products — stays free forever. We may add optional premium features (like advanced meal-planning tools) in the future. If we do, they will be optional and clearly marked.
How do I cancel a subscription?
Subscriptions are managed through your App Store or Google Play account — not through us. Go to your app store’s subscription settings to cancel at any time.
Do you offer refunds?
Refunds for subscriptions are handled by Apple or Google per their policies. Contact their support for refund requests; we unfortunately can’t process them on our side.
