What’s gluten free at Chipotle
Chipotle’s ingredient sourcing has been GF-friendly since 2014. Here’s the complete safe list:
- Bowl & salad bases — both are gluten free
- Rice — both white cilantro-lime and brown
- Beans — black and pinto
- All proteins — chicken, steak, barbacoa, carnitas, sofritas, chorizo (when available)
- All salsas — fresh tomato, roasted chili-corn, tomatillo-green chili, tomatillo-red chili
- Fajita vegetables
- Cheese, sour cream, guacamole, lettuce
- Crispy corn tortillas — used for hardshell tacos
- Tortilla chips — cooked in dedicated sunflower-oil fryer (no shared oil with wheat)
What to avoid
- Flour tortillas — burritos, quesadillas, soft-shell tacos
- Quesadillas with flour tortillas — even kid’s menu options
Cross-contact warning
Chipotle uses a single steam table line. Gloved staff move between proteins, rice, and tortillas all day. The flour tortilla press is the highest-risk surface. Best practices:
- Order online or in-app and check the ingredient list before submitting
- In-store, ask for fresh gloves at the start of your order — most staff comply
- Order a bowl rather than a “burrito in a bowl” — this reduces handling errors
- Skip extras like cheese pulled from the same area where quesadillas are made
Safe gluten-free order template
“Hi, I have celiac disease. Could you please change gloves? I’ll have a burrito bowl with brown rice, black beans, [protein], fajita veggies, salsa, lettuce, cheese, and guacamole.”
