Is Yeast Gluten Free? Baker’s, Brewer’s, Nutritional

The three yeast categories

1. Baker’s yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) — gluten free

  • Active dry yeast (Fleischmann’s, Red Star, SAF)
  • Instant / rapid-rise yeast
  • Fresh/cake yeast

All commercial baker’s yeast is grown on molasses — naturally gluten free.

2. Nutritional yeast — gluten free

  • Bragg Premium Nutritional Yeast Seasoning — GF certified
  • Bob’s Red Mill Large Flake — GF certified
  • Anthony’s Premium Nutritional Yeast — GF certified
  • Hoosier Hill Farm

Grown on sugar beet or cane molasses. Always look for the “gluten free” claim on the label, since some smaller brands use barley-based media.

3. Brewer’s yeast — AVOID

Brewer’s yeast is collected from beer fermentation tanks. It’s grown on barley malt and absorbs gluten during fermentation. Even “debittered” brewer’s yeast supplements contain gluten and are not safe for celiacs.

Some brewer’s yeast supplements (Lewis Labs) make a “specially debittered” version that’s claimed to be GF — but Beyond Celiac and the Celiac Disease Foundation recommend avoiding brewer’s yeast entirely as a precaution.

Sourdough starter

Sourdough starter cultivated from wild yeast on wheat flour is NOT gluten free, since it begins with wheat. A starter cultivated from GF flour (brown rice, sorghum) is GF.
